SPEAKER_01Let's dive right in.
SPEAKER_00K-pop Sensation Tai Yang is celebrating his birthday in style with the release of his fourth full-length album, Quintessence, marking his first solo studio album in nine years. The title, meaning Essence or Quintessence, reflects Tai Yang's year-long journey exploring what truly matters in his artistry, rather than seeking definitive answers. The 10-track album features the energetic title, track Live Fast, Die Slow, which carries a message about maintaining one's own pace and direction in a rapidly changing world, alongside nostalgic tracks like Love Like This that recall Big Bang's uh earlier emotional ballad era. Tai Yang explained that creating something new, after 20 years in the industry, proved challenging, but the album represents his effort to show both familiar and fresh sides of himself. The release comes as Big Bang celebrates their 20th anniversary, with Tai Yang promising fans will see more from the group throughout the year.
SPEAKER_01Director Park Chan Wuk has received France's highest cultural honor, becoming the first Korean film director to be awarded the Commandeur Rank of the Order of Arts and Letters. French culture minister Catherine Pegard presented the prestigious decoration to Park in Cannes, recognizing his significant contributions to cinema and his role in promoting French culture internationally. Park is only the fourth Korean to receive this top-tier honor, joining conductor Chung Myung-wun, Soprano Jo Sumi, and former Korea Arts and Culture Promotion Agency President Kim Jong-ok. The director, who is currently serving as the first Korean jury president at the Cannes Film Festival, has deep ties to the festival, having won the Grand Jury Prize for Old Boy in 2004, the jury prize for Thirst in 2009, and Best Director for Decision to Leave in 2022. Upon receiving the honor, Park expressed that his greatest remaining wish is to someday make a film in France with French actors.
SPEAKER_00The NBC drama 21st Century Grand Prince's Wife has sparked intense controversy over historical inaccuracies, prompting a sharp rebuke from renowned Korean history educator Choi Tai Sung. The 54-year-old instructor took to social media, urging the production team to come to your senses, criticizing the show for depicting the fictional Korean monarchy as appearing subordinate to China through incorrect royal protocols. Specific errors included showing the king wearing a nine-stringed crown instead of the twelve-stringed imperial crown, and having subjects shout chaons, reserved for princes, instead of mants, reserved for emperors. Despite the drama's premise of Korea as a powerful constitutional monarchy, Choi emphasized that Korean dramas and films are watched globally and rapidly shape perceptions of Korea, proposing the establishment of a dedicated historical accuracy research institute that could provide comprehensive consultation on scripts, costumes, and sets. The production team issued an apology acknowledging their insufficient review of historical context, while Stars IU and Bayon Wussiok also posted handwritten apologies for not being more thoughtful about the historical implications during filming.
SPEAKER_01The film, which held its world premiere at the 79th Cairns Film Festival in the midnight screening section, received enthusiastic standing ovations from audiences who packed the Lumia Grand Theatre. Swarm depicts survivors trapped in a shopping mall facing evolved zombies that can learn and adapt, with director Yoon explaining the concept originated from his contemplation of artificial intelligence and collective consciousness versus individual thought. Stars Jon Ji Hyun, Ji Cheng Wuk, Kim Shin Rock, Ku Kyo Huan, and Shin Hyunbin shared their experiences at Cannes, with Jon Ji Hun expressing gratitude for the opportunity to return to the big screen after 11 years and hoping the film contributes to the current resurgence of Korean cinema. The premiere screening generated seven minutes of thunderous applause, with fans holding signs pleading for tickets outside the sold-out Lumière Grande Theatre long before showtime. Critical reception proved divided, with the Hollywood reporter praising it as featuring this year's most breathtaking action direction and calling it an overwhelming experience contained coined, while Variety questioned its thematic depth, despite acknowledging the film's spectacular first hour. The 98-second international trailer, released simultaneously, showcases intense chase sequences, dramatic gunfights, and motion-captured alien characters, building anticipation for the summer release.
