SPEAKER_00We're your hosts bringing you all the hottest updates from the K-pop and K-drama world.
SPEAKER_01Today is April 9th, 2026, and we've got some incredible stories to share with you.
SPEAKER_00Let's dive right in.
SPEAKER_01Director Na Hongjin's highly anticipated new film, Hope, has been selected for the competition section at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, marking a triumphant return to the prestigious event. This achievement is particularly significant as it's the first time a Korean film has entered the Cannes competition in four years, with the last being Park Chan Wuk's decision to leave in 2022. Na Hongjin now holds the remarkable distinction of having every single one of his feature films invited to Cannes, including The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and The Wailing. The film, which features an impressive cast including Huang Jongmin, Zhou Insung, Zhang Hoyon, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander, tells the story of events that unfold when a demilitarized zone outpost chief hears reports of a tiger sighting from local youth.
SPEAKER_00The Korean film industry is facing a critical moment as 581 filmmakers, including legendary directors Bong Jun-ho and Im Gwon Taik, along with actors Moon Sori, Guan Hai Hyu, and Park Jung-hoon, have publicly called for structural reforms. At a press conference held in Seoul, industry leaders proposed implementing a screen monopoly restriction system, limiting any single film to a maximum of 20% seat occupancy at multiplex theatres, similar to France's existing model. The group also called for the creation of large-scale investment funds totalling over$2 billion to support mid-budget productions, as the current fund of$580 million is insufficient given that average commercial film budgets now exceed 10 billion one. While some view this as an industry crisis, others point to recent successes like The Man Who Lives With the King, surpassing 16 million viewers, suggesting the challenge may be more about structural reorganization than complete collapse.
SPEAKER_01BTS has officially launched their massive world tour A Ray Rang with performances at Goyang Stadium, marking their first full group tour in approximately four years since their permission to dance on stage tour concluded in Las Vegas in April 2022. The members showed touching concern for their fans ahead of the outdoor concert, with Jimin and J Hope both posting messages urging attendees to dress warmly due to rainy and cold weather conditions. The tour is set to become the largest in K-pop history, with 85 shows planned across 34 cities, including North America, Europe, and South America, utilizing three 60 degree stages at stadiums and domes. And impressive 46 shows have already sold out, with North American and European performances alone selling approximately 2.4 million tickets. And the group will make history as the first K-pop act to perform at venues like El Paso Sun Bowl Stadium and Dillette Stadium in Foxboro.
SPEAKER_00Singer and actress Cha Unwu has completed payment of approximately 20 billion one in back taxes following a tax investigation, taking full responsibility for the controversy surrounding his family-owned management company. In a heartfelt statement posted on social media, Cha Unwu acknowledged that while he established a one-person corporation during a confusing period to stabilize his activities, there were aspects he failed to examine thoroughly. The National Tax Service had conducted a high-intensity audit after discovering that his agency, Fantagio, had signed a management service contract with a corporation established by Chao Unwu's mother, which authorities viewed as an attempt to apply lower corporate tax rates instead of higher personal income tax rates. Chao Unwu emphasized that all responsibility lies with himself, rather than his family or company, apologizing to fans for disappointing them and promising to conduct all future activities with greater caution and strict oversight.
SPEAKER_01The Seoul Western District Court handed down the sentence after Nam was caught driving at 182 km per hour on Gangbyon Roe in April of last year with a blood alcohol content of 0.122%, well above the license revocation threshold. The court emphasized the severity of the offense, noting that Nam had committed this drunk driving incident during a probation period for drug-related charges and had previously received a fine for drunk driving in 2023. The judge stated that despite Nam's confession and expressions of remorse, stern punishment was unavoidable given the pattern of repeated offenses and the timing during his suspended sentence period.
SPEAKER_00Member Seol Yoon took the mound as the pitcher, while Giants outfielder and Korean national team captain Lee Jung-Hu served as catcher, creating a special Korean connection at the event. The group performed their hit song Blue Valentine, which has achieved long-term success on American radio charts, including MediaBase's top 40 radio chart and Billboard's pop airplay, despite being released in October 2025. Enemix is currently in the middle of their first world tour. Episode 1, Zero Frontier, with all six North American stops including Toronto, Brooklyn, National Harbor, Irving, and Oakland selling out, before concluding in Los Angeles and continuing to Asia in June.
SPEAKER_01Singer Su In Young opened up for the first time about her stepmother, who has been by her side for 30 years, revealing the profound sacrifices made for her and her sister. In an emotional episode on her YouTube channel, Reformed Su Yin Young, she shared that her stepmother chose not to have biological children out of concern that it might lead to unintentional favoritism towards Su Yin Young and her sister after their parents divorced when she was in third grade. Su Yin Young reflected on her immature past behavior, recalling how she once cried and thought, this is what a stepmother is like when asked to mop the floor just once, but now deeply understands the magnitude of her stepmother's sacrifice. She promised to take full responsibility for her stepmother's future, telling her, You are also my mom, and assuring her she won't regret not having her own children, while her father had even warned the stepmother not to pour too much affection into the girls to avoid getting hurt.
SPEAKER_00Miss Trot 4, Winner Lee Sonar, revealed her heartfelt plans to use her 300 million, one prize money to pay off her parents' debts, sharing the difficult family circumstances that led to their financial struggles. During an appearance on Morning Yard, Lee Sonar explained that her mother has been battling Parkinson's disease for approximately 18 years since she was in high school, initially misdiagnosed as a stroke before a proper diagnosis at a major soul hospital. Her father, who worked as a mail carrier for over 30 years, made the difficult decision to take early retirement, to care for his wife full-time for three years, and now works as a security guard to support the family. Lee Sonar expressed her determination to help her parents, stating she plans to replace her father's broken car and handle debt repayment while consulting with tax professionals, calling it the most meaningful use of seeing such a large sum in her bank account for the first time. Until then, stay tuned to all things Korean Entertainment, and we'll catch you tomorrow.
